Biotechnology

The Biotechnology Research Academy is designed to give teachers experience in promoting and conducting research in biotechnology with their students. Teachers will develop knowledge and skills in the areas of DNA and protein analysis through hands-on activities in genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics. Highlights include: PCR, DNA fingerprinting, column chromatography, protein fingerprinting, and sequencing. These standards-based workshops and offered at a modest fee of $25 to participants. The fee covers morning hospitality and lunches.

Announcing expanded programs for 2008!

ETEC now offers teachers the option of earning graduate credit towards a Master's of Science in Education. Read More.

Level-1 is a 3-day program providing an overview of the field of biotechnology, and hands-on activities focused on DNA technologies including bacterial transformation, DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis and DNA fingerprinting.

Level-1 Content -
DNA extraction
Gel Electrophoresis
Restriction Digest / DNA Fingerprinting
Bacterial Transformation
Protein Chromatography
Intro to Bioinformatics

Level-2 is a 5-day program focusing on advanced tools in biotechnology including PCR, bioinformatics, DNA sequencing, and protein analysis through western blotting. Level-2 in biotechnology is tied to the California content standards to directly teach evolution, genetics and immunology through inquiry, investigation and experimentation.

Level-2 Content:
PCR
DNA sequencing
Bradford Assay
Protein Electrophoresis / SDS-PAGE
Western Blotting
Bioinformatics
Tour the Joint Genome Institute

Level-2 (emphasis in Bioinformatics) is available for teachers who have completed Level-1 biotechnology workshops or have a strong foundation in cell and molecular biology. This workshop is offered in conjunction with American River College and UC Davis Biotechnology Program and sponsored by the NSF ATE award #0603841. This workshop provides campus housing for participants and a stipend of $400. Space is limited and preference will be given to Northern California teachers serving diverse student populations or socio-economically disadvantaged communities.
